Bring the Bikes, Then Choose Your Kind of Ride

Bicycles are a handy addition to an RV trip to Fort Pierce. You can keep a ride short and close to your campsite, head inland for a longer outing, or plan a day around the coast. The important choice comes before you unload: do you want a paved path, a roadside bike lane, or an unpaved trail?

This guide helps Road Runner guests sort those options without treating every route as interchangeable. Start with the rider who wants the shortest day, check conditions, and leave enough energy for the return trip. A relaxed morning ride counts just as much as a big mileage day.

For an Easy Start: Ride at Road Runner

Road Runner's facilities and amenities include roads for cycling, jogging, and walking. A short spin around the resort is a practical way to check your bike after travel and settle into vacation mode. These are shared resort roads: ride slowly, watch for vehicles and pedestrians, and follow posted rules.

Before heading farther afield, check tire pressure, brakes, and how securely everything survived the journey on your rack. If you're traveling with children or a companion returning to cycling, begin with a short ride together before committing to a longer route away from your site.

For a Longer Paved Outing: The Cowboy Trail

Visit St. Lucie's cycling guide describes the Cowboy Trail as a roughly 44-mile round trip paralleling State Road 70. Think of that as a full-distance option, not a requirement. An out-and-back ride lets you choose a turnaround that suits your group.

The Cycle St. Lucie route description identifies a paved path separate from motor traffic, shared with horse riders. It also describes an approach from Ten Mile Creek Preserve that uses Gordy Road and requires crossing State Road 70. The whole outing is therefore not a traffic-free ride. Review the access carefully before choosing it for children or anyone uncomfortable with road crossings.

Services and shelter along the route are limited. Carry your water and snacks, give horses plenty of room, and stay on the path rather than approaching the canal or wildlife. Plan a shorter first visit so you can learn the route without being committed to its full length.

For Coastal Scenery: Understand the A1A Sections

Visit St. Lucie also highlights A1A's bike lanes and parks along the lagoon. A bike lane runs beside moving traffic; it is a different experience from a separated recreation path. Choose this kind of ride only if everyone in your group is comfortable with those conditions.

For riders considering a mix of surfaces, Cycle St. Lucie's Mangrove Ride describes an approximately 19.5-mile outing combining sandy trails with A1A connections. Its description calls for a trail bike and notes that the route is unmarked. Use it as a planning reference, then confirm current access and follow signs on arrival. Don't assume a gate opening means every adjoining path is public or open for bicycles.

If that sounds more involved than your group wants, keep your cycling day simple and plan a separate visit using our Fort Pierce beach guide.

Check Savannas Alerts Before Planning a Trail Day

Savannas Preserve State Park offers multi-use trails, but access needs an extra check. At publication, the official park page lists construction restrictions, a Canoe Launch Road vehicle closure related to water levels, and the Savannas Sun Trail as not yet open to the public.

Check that page again for your travel date or call the park at (772) 398-2779. Ask which entrance and bicycle routes are available for your intended visit. A trail appearing on a map is not proof that it is open today.

Make the Outing Fit Your RV Vacation

Carry water, a charged phone, a lock, and basic repair supplies. Check the forecast before leaving, choose a realistic turnaround time, and tell someone your plan. If you bring an e-bike, confirm the rules for the specific trail rather than assuming every bicycle route permits it.

A separate vehicle can make it easier to reach a trailhead while your RV stays settled. We have not confirmed oversized-vehicle parking at these starting points; check with the site operator before arriving with a motorhome or trailer.

Back at Road Runner, leave time to enjoy your site or a meal at Charlene's Coyote Grille; confirm current service hours when planning lunch. Explore our RV accommodations and check availability for a Fort Pierce stay with room for both exploring and relaxing.
