About Fort Pierce

Often called the "Sunrise City," Fort Pierce is part of the Treasure Coast, a stretch of land from St. Lucie Inlet to Sebastian Inlet along Florida's Atlantic coast. Natural and artificial reefs make for good fishing and diving. The Indian River Lagoon Estuary provides a haven for more than 4,000 plant and animal species. Visit the revitalized waterfront downtown area, which has retained its old Florida charm. It offers contemporary shopping, dining, great fishing and a range of entertainment and activities such as the NAVY SEAL Museum, Farmers' Market, Bike Night, Friday Fest, Jazz Society and the city-owned and -operated 1,200-seat Sunrise Theatre for the Performing Arts.

NAVY SEAL Museum

In 1981, the idea for a Museum dedicated to the men who trained on the beaches of Fort Pierce was born. Retired SEAL Capt. Norman Olson was brought aboard to turn the dream into a reality. With typical SEAL fortitude and ingenuity, he was able to get the Museum off the ground in a few months on a shoestring budget.

Our Museum opened on the site of a defunct Museum for pirate treasure on Veteran’s Day, 1985. From those humble beginnings, the Museum has experienced tremendous growth to become a museum of national stature, drawing tens of thousands of visitors every year. From a collection of artifacts from attics and old trunks, the Museum now displays vehicles, vessels, equipment and weaponry from the earliest days of Naval Special Warfare to today’s multifaceted global operators and headline conflicts.
